A New Way to Care For Your Brain

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

As a doula, one of my duties is supporting parents in caring for themselves so they can better care for their little ones. I do this by providing virtual or in-person support, encouragement and a listening ear, but one of the most important things I do is connect parents to resources in our community; so that they continue to feel supported once doula care ends. My dear friend Robyn Kopriva, is a Registered Social Worker and is Certified in NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, she is the owner of Great Lakes Neurofeedback, here in Sarnia, Ontario. I asked her to share with you how Neurofeedback can help you as a new parent.

I want to first start by thanking Javi for inviting me to be a guest blogger. I am grateful to have been invited to her platform where I can share and connect with all of you. My mission is to facilitate personal transformation with NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback Brain Training. I believe that every brain deserves this!

Being a parent in today's overstimulated and busy modern society is tough. Many are bombarded with ‘to-do’ lists, deadlines, demands and frustrations all while trying to manage the family's needs. Many parents would say self-care often falls to the wayside…

“...Self-care… say what? Ya right…. what is that again?” (...says almost every parent out there).

I am sure we have all heard the saying; “we can't pour from an empty cup,” but it can be extremely difficult for parents to find time to make themselves a priority because they selflessly put the needs of their family before their own. If we don't find time to reset and recharge-- this can be a recipe for burn-out.

Self-care in NOT selfish

In general, we are all experiencing higher levels of stress than ever before and our nervous system is not equipped, nor designed to live in this heightened and dysregulated state. Our modern lifestyles are requiring a lot from our mind and body making it increasingly more difficult to think clearly, concentrate and cope with everyday stressors. These are all signs of burn-out and a disorganized/ “noisy” brain! When stress is mixed with a dysregulated nervous system can have many negative impacts on our physical, mental and emotional well-being making it very difficult to cope.

I am here to tell you that there is hope for you and your busy family! Neurofeedback is an incredibly gentle, non-invasive and effective intervention that can help bring ease and balance back into your life.

Introducing Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a form of bio-feedback that offers training to the brain, empowering it to function at its best. Simply put, our program supports your brain’s natural ability to self-organize for optimal functioning by giving the brain information about itself. Using EEG sensors, the system detects changes in your electrical activity and mirrors that information back to your brain (265x/second) via skips in the music. This initiates the brains orienting response and prompts the central nervous system to learn, adapt and self-organize. With the discovery of neuroplasticity - your brain's ability to continuously reorganize, adapt, and rewire - neurofeedback has become a rapidly growing field. NeurOptimal® empowers your whole brain to perform at its best regardless of diagnosis, labels, or goals. NeurOptimal® was developed by Clinical Psychologists, Drs. Susan and Valdeane Brown and has evolved over the course of 30 years, with 4 million+ session-hours logged and thousands of clients reporting being helped.

Benefits of Neurofeedback

Your brain—i.e. your central nervous system has a built-in capacity to self-correct, regulate and heal if given the proper environment and tools to do so. This is where Neurofeedback brain training comes in! Using feedback, you can naturally train your brain to become more flexible and function more optimally. The easier your brain adjusts to the changes encountered in a normal busy day, the better you may feel. A balanced brain promotes a healthy body. Why not help it function at its best with brain training?
