The amazing benefits of prenatal massage

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

There is nothing like a relaxing massage to soothe sore muscles and melt away stress. This is especially true while pregnant, the added weight and change to the center of gravity can trigger aches and pains in the body. Numerous studies have shown that the benefits of adding massage therapy to your prenatal care go far beyond relaxation and pain relief.

Massage therapy during pregnancy can lower anxiety levels and depressed mood.

Adding weekly massage to your prenatal self-care can help improve your mood and to regulate stress hormones. Touch is healing for both your body and your mind.

Prenatal massage can have a calming effect on your baby.

It is now known that pregnant persons suffering from depression may also experience excessive fetal activity. In 16- week study, male partners were asked to massage their pregnant significant others experiencing depression, just twice weekly for 20 minutes. By the end of the study, data showed a decrease in fetal activity. This shows how in tune your baby is with you and your feelings. Relaxed mom, relaxed baby.

Massage therapy can improve your baby’s health after birth.

Research that studied the effects of prenatal massage in neonatal outcomes showed a 75% lower prematurity rate, 80% lower chance of having a newborn with a low birth weight. How amazing is that?

Benefits of massage extend into the postpartum period, for both you and your baby.

Cortisol is a stress hormone and continuous high levels of it can cause feelings of anxiety, depression, headaches, problems with digestion, trouble sleeping and weight gain. Pregnant persons that received massaged weekly had lower levels of cortisol throughout pregnancy, this continued in the weeks following the birth of their baby.

The stress hormone-reducing effects of massage therapy also influenced the babies after birth, newborns in the study showed lower levels of cortisol than the newborns of mothers who were not massaged.

Who knew that massage could have such a positive impact in your and your baby’s health?
